The Shikon Jewel has a few names, which it is referred to as. The main name however, is the Shikon Jewel. It is also known as Shikon no Tama, and the Jewel of Four Souls. The Shikon Jewel is basically the entire plot of InuYasha. The magical gem was created in a cave near Sango’s village at the time when Midoriko was alive. Midoriko was a strong and powerful warrior. Unfortunately, Midoriko died during a war against innumerable demons. Rumor has it that the Shikon no Tama gets its mighty and indeed magical power from that raging war, because the jewel contains the invincible souls of Midoriko and the violent demons. It is also said that the battle against Midoriko and the demons still continues within the Shikon Jewel.

At the time Midoriko and the capable demons were trapped inside the Shikon Jewel, the enchanting gem was passed down generation to generation by the people who fought alongside Midoriko. Eventually, the Shikon Jewel ended up in the hands the Taiji-ya tribe, which is more commonly known as the demon exterminator tribe. However, the Shikon Jewel turned out to be more a trouble than they could handle, and soon the Jewel of Four Souls was given to the priestess Kikyo.

Priestess Kikyo was supposed to keep the Shikon Jewel pure and safe, and she did for a while. Kikyo quickly fell in love with the half human, half demon InuYasha and soon complications ensued. Naraku, an evil and determined demon, set a plot to make InuYasha and Kikyo to revenge each other. With this, Kikyo suspended InuYasha onto an ancient tree using an enchanting arrow and as well, Kikyo died. However, Kikyo had one last request which was to burn the Shikon Jewel with her in fire so that no demon or anyone can gain great power from the Shikon Jewel and become near invincible as a result.

Here's a picture of the Shikon Jewel. As you can see, it has a  bright purple glow is because of the special and strong magical power which it has inside of it. This power is the strength which Midoriko and the strong demons had in their raging war. Also, there are small white little sparks coming from it, either because its power is being summoned, the power is being used by someone, or because the power is at its highest level of strength and magic. The jewel, being attached by white beads, can be used as a necklace and mostly is used on the neck.

After Kikyo being burned in fire, the Shikon Jewel was thought to be gone forever, until Kagome showed up in feudal Japan. Utilizing the great and magnificent power of the Shikon Jewel, without knowing it, Kagome drew a millipede-like demon called the Mistress Centipede through the well to her. In the middle of this seem-to-be battle, Kagome (warned by Kaede to not take out the magic arrow which was infused into InuYasha by the priestess Kikyo to suspend him on the tree for decades) pulled out the enchanted arrow letting free InuYasha; the Shikon Jewel came out of Kagome. And Kagome was charged to protect it, by the order of Kaede, Kikyo’s younger sister (who is fifty-years-old). InuYasha, using his ultimate claws, fortunately destroyed the Mistress Centipede.

The Shikon Jewel had not been forgotten by the demon population of that time period though, and soon after the Jewel reemerged, demons came hunting it. During a heated battle with the Crow demon, the Shikon Jewel was shattered into thousands of dozens of shards by an arrow fired by Kagome. Now Kagome has been destined to collect all of the magical shards, to make the feudal Japan area safe, or at least safer by comparison. Kagome, however, is not alone on this dangerous adventure and has InuYasha, the powerful half demon with her, though whether or not he wants the Shikon Jewel for himself has yet to be seen. And with tough competitors like Naraku in their way, it’s not going to be an easy journey to collect the shards. However, this quest will definitely not be forgotten for with, Shippo, Sango, and Miroku, it just makes it more and more interesting each day for InuYasha and Kagome.
